We are talking about heads-up displays (HUDs), of course. Without this relatively new technology, those expensive birds and precious pilots put themselves at risk. BMW was the first European automaker to incorporate heads-up technology in their vehicles. Since 2004, this incredible tech has graced the windshields and been an integral part of BMW ConnectedDrive in the BMW 5 Series and 7 Series. It has since been developed and refined for precision and aesthetic and is available for almost the entire BMW line. A normal driver without a HUD takes a full second to check his speed or other status. That is a full second of eyes off the road this translates to several dozen feet of roadway travelled literally "blind". Incorporation of a HUD reduces this distraction by more than half, meaning the driver's eyes manage to stay where they need to be - on the road ahead. The virtual image is perceived as hovering at eye level on the hood and can only be seen by the driver. BMW recently invited a EuroFighter pilot to have a seat in their machine and critique the BMW HUD. The pilot was impressed overall, stating "our monochrome head-up display in the cockpit is unable to offer such a brilliant display quality". Looks like BMW should share some of its technology with the world's air cadets!
