Laser light will introduce entirely new functions to automobile illumination, as well as increased safety and comfort. It also is even more efficient than LED, meaning a savings of fuel and energy. Laser light produces a monochromatic beam, which means, technically speaking, that all the light waves are the same length. This translates to a highly inherent efficiency of illumination, meaning we'll get a very bright, purely white, non-dazzling beam to guide us during darker drives. The technology is completely safe to humans and animals, and will reduce the required size of the headlights, thanks to its brilliance, which means BMW will have more flexibility in the design phase and body styling. The first BMW to receive this technology (and the first mass-produced vehicle, ever) will be the upcoming BMW i8 Concept, the flagship of the BMW-i sub brand. The result will be an intense beam of pure white light, which is both very bright and more pleasing to the eye. The tech, will be able to use all the existing BMW illumination tech, including Adaptive Headlights, Dynamic Light Spot and Anti-Dazzle High-Beam Assist. It all sounds pretty cool! |
