BMW ActiveHybrid 5 at Tokyo Auto Show

Built on the 5 Series platform, the ActiveHybrid 5 will have both a 6-cylinder engine and an electric drive system, both paired to an 8-speed auto transmission and a lithium battery pack. Drivers can enable solely electric power for short drives and activate the gas one for longer runs.

BMW said the ActiveHybrid 5 has an all-new "intelligent energy management system," which the company said "works in tandem with the navigation system to prepare the car's drive functions in advance for upcoming road conditions."

First shown as a concept in 2010 at the Geneva Auto Show, the car is now ready for mass production. BMW is looking forward to unveiling their all-new “next-generation” hybrid drivetrain, which is featured in this vehicle first.
