2009 BMW 528i Overview
The new 2009 5-Series has been redesigned with a focus on power, style and fuel economy. Across the variations, we see new style lines, a more aggressive grill and completely rethought rear lights aesthetics. In addition, a generous helping of new technology and performance-enhancing features have been added, allowing the series to maintain its position ahead of its competitors. The 6 incarnations of the 5-Series share a variety of features and characteristics, including engines that focus more strongly on fuel efficiency.
The 528i and 528xi have power-seats, 17-inch tires, sun-roof and an enhanced, easier-to-use iDrive system. The 528xi has BMW's proprietary xDrive system, for added stability and performance on most any driving surface. Of the 6 models, 2 are powered by a 3.0 liter inline 6 churning out 230 HP, 3 are powered by the fantastic twin-turbo, 300 hp, 300 lb-ft 3.0-liter first seen in the 335i coupe and one (the 550i) houses a powerful 4.8 liter V8 capable of an impressive 360 HP. The smaller engine achieves 28 MPG on the highway, while the larger 4.8 ranks in at an amazing 22 MPG on the highway, showing that the focus on fuel-efficiency was well-spent.
Even more time was spent in consideration of the occupants' comfort, so the new 2009 5-Series have been given increased cabin space in the areas of head and leg room. Two adults have absolutely no problem riding in comfort in the back seats, while added lumbar support in the driver's position is a godsend for those long drives. Trunk storage climbs to 14 cubic feet while the wagon gets a hearty 34 cubic feet. Despite larger dimensions, the various 5-Series models are overall lighter than their 2008 counterparts, enhancing the handling of an already impressive series. Active Yaw Control also increases handling and response.
All-in-all, the new 2009 5-Series is an ingenious bit of German engineering, adding a new sense of class, style and performance to its already lofty perch in the class of luxury performance vehicles.
